Wow! Can you believe this week is the last week of the 1st quarter of Fourth Grade? Time flies when you're having fun! I love being your teacher! Seeing you grow and learn brings a big smile to my face.
You've definitely been working hard to memorize and spell your high frequency words these last eight weeks. Tomorrow, we're scheduled to take the summative word study assessment. Remember to use your pretest to study your words this evening. Students are required to know how to spell contractions and will be asked to write the words they join on the test. For example, you'll need to know how to spell let's, the contraction. You also need to identify that let's is the contraction for the words let us. Try spelling your words aloud while tossing the ball, jumping rope, or showing your family word chants. If you've got one or two that still give you trouble, try making up a rhyme or clue that will trigger your brain whenever you need to spell the word. For example, friend ends with end. The word there has the word here in it. Whatever you decide, try to make it fun! Students are assigned three word study activities as homework this week. They may choose three of the following activities to help study their October NTF words. (Remember to number your lines and skip a line in between.)
Spooky Spelling- write each of your NTF words three times. Print the first two times and write in a spooky font the third time. Scrambled Words- Scramble the letters of your words. Have a partner unscramble them, and then write them one more time. ABC Order- write each word twice in alphabetical order. Red Alert! Blue Alert!- Use one of the following codes to print your NTF words: write all vowels in red pencil or pen and all consonants with blue pencil or pen or write all affixes in red and all bases/roots in blue. Spelling City- Complete Teach Me, Play a Game, and Test Me. Then write a completion statement on a piece of lined paper and have an adult sign. Make a Puzzle- use Discovery Education's word search maker or graph paper to create your very own word search or crossword puzzle. Remember to include an answer key! |
